Holiday in the Eastern Ore Mountains – nature, hiking and peace in one of the most unspoilt regions of Germany

Forests, mountain streams, wide views – and Dresden, Teplice and Prague within reach. Welcome to Landhotel Altes Zollhaus.

holidaying in the Eastern Ore Mountains

There are places you experience

There are places you visit.

And there are places you experience.

The Landhotel Altes Zollhaus in Neuhermsdorf is one of these special places. In the middle of the Eastern Ore Mountains, at around 800 metres above sea level, a landscape awaits you that has preserved its original character to this day. Dense forests, clear mountain streams, gentle peaks and wide views shape the region – far from the hectic pace of everyday life and yet surprisingly easy to reach.

After their first stay, many of our guests tell us that they never expected to find such peace just a few kilometres from Dresden. In fact, the Alte Zollhaus and the Saxon state capital are separated by just 39 kilometres. In less than an hour you swap the historic old town of Dresden for a landscape where, instead of traffic noise, you only hear the wind in the treetops.

Its proximity to the Czech Republic also makes the Alte Zollhaus an ideal base. You can reach the traditional spa town of Teplice in about 25 minutes, the world-famous Saxon Switzerland is also within easy driving distance, and even a day trip to Prague is easily possible.

But most guests quickly realise: you don’t really want to go far at all.

Because right outside the door begins what brings so many people back to the Ore Mountains year after year.

Nature.
Peace.
Movement.
Fresh air.
And the feeling of finally having time again.

The Alte Zollhaus – the perfect base for your holiday in the Ore Mountains

The location of the Alte Zollhaus could hardly be better.

While many hotels advertise a beautiful view, the Alte Zollhaus really is in the middle of nature. The first hiking trails start practically right outside the door. You step out of the hotel, lace up your hiking boots and within a few minutes you are already among tall spruces, old beeches and small mountain streams.

No car.
No searching for a parking space.
No crowded tourist spots.
Just start walking.

It is precisely this direct connection to nature that makes the Alte Zollhaus so special.

Many guests simply leave their car keys untouched for their entire stay and explore the area on foot. Every path leads to new views, small clearings or quiet forest trails where you sometimes hardly meet another person for hours.

It is a kind of peace that many visitors hardly know from their everyday lives.

A holiday at around 800 metres – fresh air in every season

The altitude of the Alte Zollhaus is one of the great advantages of the region.
While it often gets hot in the cities in summer, up here you enjoy pleasantly fresh temperatures. Especially on warm July days, the Eastern Ore Mountains are a wonderful retreat. Many hikes are pleasant even on hot days.

The forests provide shade.
The air stays fresh.
And in the evening the temperatures often drop noticeably.
That is also why many of our fasting weeks, yoga retreats or Wim Hof seminars take place right here.
Nature supports what body and mind need.
Peace.
Coolness.
Fresh air.
Movement.
In autumn the altitude shows itself in a very special way. In the mornings a fine mist often lies over the meadows while the first rays of sunshine already bathe the treetops in warm gold.
In winter the landscape turns into a silent world of snow.
And even in spring the air stays clear and pleasant.
Every season has its own character here.

Here the forest is still a real forest

When people think of forests today, they often picture wide forestry roads, lots of activity and developed tourist areas.
The Eastern Ore Mountains show a different side.

Here, dense spruce forests grow next to old beech stands. Moss covers stones and fallen tree trunks. Small springs rise at the wayside and join to form clear mountain streams whose water stays pleasantly cool even in high summer. On some days a fine mist hangs between the trees in the morning.

The sun’s rays slowly break through the treetops.
A woodpecker hammers somewhere in the distance.
Otherwise you hear nothing.
It is precisely this unspoilt nature that our guests particularly appreciate.
Here nature does not need to impress anyone.
It is simply there.
Honest.
Quiet.
Unspoilt.
Perhaps that is why many people seem more relaxed after just a few hours.
Your gaze becomes calmer.
Your thoughts become clearer.
You automatically start to walk more slowly.
And suddenly you notice things that everyday life hardly leaves time for.
The scent of the forest.
The rustling of the trees.
The babbling of a small brook.
Or the light falling through the branches.

Hiking straight from the hotel – discovering the Ore Mountains step by step

For many guests, the holiday begins the moment they step out of the front door of the Alte Zollhaus.

No planning.
No driving.
No crowds.
The hiking trails start right in front of the hotel.

The Eastern Ore Mountains are one of the most beautiful hiking regions in Saxony and offer the right route for every fitness level. Leisurely walks alternate with more demanding tours over the ridges of the Ore Mountains.

Along the way you can expect:

  • dense forests
  • natural paths
  • small mountain streams
  • historic border stones
  • wide mountain meadows
  • viewpoints reaching into Bohemia
  • quiet clearings
  • rustic mountain inns

It is exactly this mix that makes hiking here so varied.

Sometimes the path leads through a shady forest.

Then suddenly the view opens up over the Eastern Ore Mountains.

A few minutes later, the soothing sound of a small brook accompanies you again.

It is precisely these changing impressions that make every hike a special experience.

Rediscovering silence

Many people spend their everyday lives in a world full of noise.

Cars.
Phones.
Appointments.
Traffic.
In the Eastern Ore Mountains many guests experience real silence for the first time in a long while.
Not complete soundlessness.
But the sounds of nature.
The twittering of birds.
The cracking of a branch.
The wind in the treetops.
The water of a small brook.
This peace feels almost meditative.
It is no coincidence that the Alte Zollhaus regularly hosts fasting weeks, yoga retreats, forest bathing and seminars on personal development .
Here nature does part of the work.
It slows you down.
All by itself.
