In short

What is yoga good for?

Yoga is good for body and mind at the same time. It makes you more flexible, strengthens core, legs and posture, trains your balance and helps you reduce stress. For chronic back pain, yoga is one of the best-studied forms of exercise.

What makes it special: yoga combines movement with conscious breathing. So you don’t just train muscles, but also your ability to calm down. Many people sleep better and feel more balanced – after just a few weeks of two or three short sessions a week.

It’s most beautiful outdoors. Our film above shows yoga in slow motion on the platform by the natural lake – as calm as a good yoga class feels.

💡 At a glance

  • Body: flexibility, strength, posture, balance
  • Back: can ease chronic back pain
  • Mind: less stress, better mood, better sleep
  • How often: 2–3 × a week, 15–30 minutes is enough
  • Who for: beginners as well as experienced yogis

Back & tension

Yoga is one of the best-studied forms of exercise for chronic back pain. Calm postures strengthen the deep core muscles, stretches release tight hips and back muscles.

How strong is the evidence?Well studied – A large Cochrane review (2022) shows that yoga can somewhat improve pain and everyday function in chronic low back pain – similar to other targeted exercise programmes.
🤸 2 / 8

Flexibility

Regular stretching in the postures makes hips, shoulders and spine more supple. Many people notice after just a few weeks that they reach their toes more easily or feel less stiff in the morning.

How strong is the evidence?Well studied – Studies almost consistently show better flexibility – in younger and older people alike.
💪 3 / 8

Strength & posture

Holding warrior, plank or chair pose, your whole body works with its own weight. That strengthens legs, core and shoulders – and helps you sit and stand taller.

How strong is the evidence?Good evidence – Gentle styles strengthen moderately, dynamic styles such as vinyasa much more. Yoga is no substitute for strength training, but a great complement.
🌳 4 / 8

Balance

One-legged postures such as tree pose train balance and body awareness. That gives you confidence in everyday life – on a hike as well as on icy paths in winter.

How strong is the evidence?Good evidence – According to the US health agency NCCIH, yoga may improve balance, especially in older adults.
🌿 5 / 8

Stress & inner calm

Slow movement combined with a calm, long exhale tells your body: you are safe. Your pulse slows down and your thoughts get quieter.

How strong is the evidence?Good evidence – Many studies show that yoga can reduce perceived stress. It works best when you practise regularly.
😴 6 / 8

Better sleep

A gentle evening practice with forward bends, legs up the wall and breathing exercises helps many people switch off and fall asleep more easily.

How strong is the evidence? Some evidence – There is evidence of better sleep quality, for example with sleep problems or during menopause. The studies are often small, though.
☀️ 7 / 8

Mood & wellbeing

After a yoga class most people feel lighter and more content. Movement, breathing and a few minutes just for you – that is good for the soul.

How strong is the evidence? Some evidence – Studies point to less tension and low mood. Yoga can complement treatment, but not replace it.
💨 8 / 8

Breathing & focus

In yoga you learn to breathe consciously and deeply. That sharpens your focus, because your attention keeps returning to the breath and the body.

How strong is the evidence? Some evidence – Breathing exercises (pranayama) are well tolerated. There is first positive evidence for better concentration.

When does yoga work?

Yoga & nature

Why yoga in nature feels even better

Yoga works anywhere. Outdoors, something is added that no studio can offer.

🌲 Yoga outdoors by the natural lake

  • fresh forest air instead of heated indoor air
  • birdsong and water instead of traffic noise – your mind gets quiet faster
  • studies on time in the forest suggest that nature also helps reduce stress
  • morning daylight is good for your sleep-wake rhythm
  • then straight on: hiking in the Ore Mountains from the door

🏠 Yoga indoors

  • whatever the weather – ideal in winter
  • even temperature for calm yin sessions
  • fewer distractions for beginners
  • at the Zollhaus: our yoga room with a view of the green

Try it

Feel it yourself: 4-6 breathing

Breathe in for 4 seconds and out for 6 seconds. The longer exhale has a calming effect – it is at the heart of many yoga breathing exercises.

Start the exercise and follow the circle for about 3 to 5 minutes. If you feel dizzy, go back to breathing normally.

If you’d like to dive deeper into the power of the breath, we also offer courses in the Wim Hof Method – breathing and cold, guided by a certified instructor.

FAQ: What is yoga good for?

Any questions? Call us on +49 35057 540 or write to us via the contact form.

What is yoga good for?

Yoga makes you more flexible, strengthens core and legs, improves balance and can ease stress, tension and chronic back pain. Many people also sleep better and feel more balanced.

How often should you do yoga to feel an effect?

You often feel more relaxed after the very first class. For more flexibility, strength and a relieved back, 2–3 sessions a week over 8–12 weeks is a good guideline – even 15 minutes counts.

Is yoga suitable for beginners?

Yes. Gentle hatha or yin yoga are ideal to start with. You need no previous experience and you don’t have to be flexible – flexibility is a result of yoga, not a requirement.

Which yoga style is right for me?

For your back, stress and sleep, calm styles such as hatha and yin yoga are a good fit. If you are looking for strength and fitness, try vinyasa or power yoga. Our yoga goal finder above helps you choose.

Can yoga relieve back pain?

In chronic, non-specific low back pain, yoga can somewhat improve pain and everyday function, as a Cochrane review shows. With acute or severe pain, talk to a doctor first.

Why is yoga in nature especially good for you?

Fresh air, birdsong and a view of the green help you switch off. Studies on spending time in the forest suggest that nature also helps reduce stress – so yoga and nature complement each other.

Can I do yoga at Landhotel Altes Zollhaus without booking a package?

Guests with a booked package have a guaranteed place in all yoga classes and the activity plan. Hotel guests without a package can join spontaneously on site for €15 per hour while places are available. The timetable is available at reception; reservations are not possible. Day guests please call ahead: +49 35057 540.

Yoga does not replace medical treatment. If you have pre-existing conditions, severe pain or are pregnant, talk to your doctor before you start.
